What better way to acquaint Israeli museumgoers with the realities faced by their unseen neighbors than an exhibition that communicates the impossible decisions asylum seekers are forced to make?

These decisions include, but aren’t limited to, returning to the dangers of their home countries; leaving Holot and facing imprisonment; and accepting monetary incentives to relocate to a third country — usually Rwanda or Uganda — where their legal status cannot be guaranteed. … Just days before Prime Minister Gillard's arrival in Port Morseby, the Australian High Commissioner, Deborah Stokes, made a flying visit to the refugee centre, not expecting to be bugged, it would seem, by the presence of any journalists on the island.

REPORTER: Ma'am, it's Mark Davis from SBS TV, can I ask you how your trip was to the facility?

DEBORAH STOKES, AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER: It was a very straight forward trip to the facility.

REPORTER: Are you concerned - I mean there's been various rumours published about the place. Are you concerned about those rumours of inadequate facilities for children and mistreatment of adults?

DEBORAH STOKES: I've had a good look at the facility and that's all I can say at this point.

REPORTER: Could I ask you one question - why is the place so obsessively secretive - no access to journalists, NGOs, lawyers?

DEBORAH STOKES: It's run by the Papua New Guinean Government and that's their decision.

REPORTER: The Papua New Guinean Government says it's not, the Prime Minister says he's happy for journalists and others to go there because he's worried the rumours are growing to such a degree no-one can verify them or otherwise.

DEBORAH STOKES: We will have a discussion with the PNG Government about that.

REPORTER: So as far as you're aware, the Australian Government has no problem with access?

DEBORAH STOKES: The PNG Government is the administrator of the centre and it is on their land, and we will have a discussion with them about that.

REPORTER: So theoretically if they're happy with it, it shouldn't be a problem?

New charges against man who attempted escape from Australia/PNG illegal anti-refugee "resettlement" regime mentioned in court [PNG Loop - 6/4/17]:

Iranian refugee Loghman Sawari has been slapped with two more charges under the Migration Act.

The 21 year old refugee was taken to the Waigani Police Station on Tuesday afternoon straight from his court trial at the Waigani District Court by police and Immigration officials.

He was then charged for making False Representation under section 16(1)(e) of the Migration act.

He was also charged under section 16(1)(k) of the same act for using a passport which was fraudulently obtained.

His case under these new charges was briefly mentioned in court today by Magistrate John Kaumi.

Sawari was not in court and the matter was adjourned to next week.

He allegedly used false identification to obtain travel documents which he later used to leave PNG for Fiji.

For the first case, his lawyer, Loani Henao told the court on Tuesday that there was no evidence that he used a PNG Passport, number e133854 to travel out nor obtained the passport from falsified information.

A ruling on the no-case submission is expected on April 11. ...

Turnbull visits PNG in leadup to election, as Australia's atrocities against refugees continue unopposed and unscrutinised [The National - 7/4/17]:

National Health Board deputy chairman Dr Mathias Sapuri hopes that Australia and Papua New Guinea will talk about the health sector during Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s visit to PNG this weekend.

Sapuri said despite all the assistance, PNG was not getting the maximum benefit from these programmes.

He said most of the money returned to Australia through high management costs and expensive consultants to run these programmes.

“This is a long overdue visit and I am pleased that this happening now,” Sapuri said.

“Australia and PNG should a have a frank discussion about health sector AusAID programmes. We thank the Australian taxpayers for the aid in donor programmes but despite all the help, we not getting the maximum benefit from these programmes.

“Most of the money returns to Australia through 30 to 40 per cent of management and paying expensive consultants to run the programmes.

“I feel strongly that it is about time Australia and PNG stop these programmes and directly fund health infrastructures, upgrade facilities, fund a new cancer institute, upgrade specialist services with new facilities and train specialist overseas, fix the drug supply system and fix the rural health programmes.

“This visit also should address Manus refugees centre, assist PNG in sustainable agriculture development.”

Manus Island rape claims: Censored report shows Australia's Immigration Department hiding something [ABC - 2/6/16]:

The MP for Manus Island has accused the Federal Government of a cover-up after the Immigration Department released a largely censored report into the alleged rape of a detention centre employee.

The 68-page document obtained by Lateline under freedom of information refers to the alleged rape of the Papua New Guinean woman by three Australian security guards in July last year.

It is alleged the woman had been drinking with the Wilson security guards, when she was allegedly drugged and later found naked and unconscious in a bathroom at the security staff quarters.

A short time after, the men were stood down and returned to Australia.

In December last year, Lateline lodged a freedom of information request into the case.

Six months later, the Department released the document, however almost every page has been redacted.

The Department argued making the information public would damage Australia's relationship with Papua New Guinea. ...
