Report from #BehrouzBoochani award winning journalist and human rights defender on events today on #Manus ‏@drobwlldiad [5/10/16]:

Today a lot of security officers, case managers, immigration staff and PNG police have tried to separate people (refugees) from each other in Manus prison.

Their plan is to separate people with negative status from people with positive status.

The refugees have had some serious arguments with them but they say that you must move and don't have any choice.

They are like a primitive tribe that attack us.

Everything in Manus prison is done by force and under a big dictatorship.

Anybody that resists is put in Manus jail, the small jail in Lorengua town that is meant for local people.

The atmosphere of Manus prison is full of stress and pressure.

The system is completely illegal, the prison is illegal, separating people is illegal and their processing is illegal.

An order from the Supreme Court against the deportation of asylum seekers in Manus is still active, says lawyer representing over 600 asylum seekers in Manus, Ben Lomai.

“They have no right whatever to categorise the asylum seekers anymore but to move them back to Australia,” he said.

Meanwhile, two of the asylum seekers’ cases being pursued in the Supreme Court will return on Oct 27, where two applications will be heard by three judges.

The first application will be moved by PNG Immigration and State's lawyers in relation to a jurisdictional issue.

They claim that Lomai, as a lawyer for the asylum seekers, has no right to sign the Enforcement of Constitutional Rights' Applications on their behalf.

The second application was filed by Lomai on behalf of the asylum seekers, asking for Summary Judgment from the Supreme Court.

That also covers compensation for the illegal detainment of his clients following the five-man Supreme Court bench ruling on April 26. [PNG Loop - 4/10/16]

PNG Opposition finally says something about Australia's illegal concentration camp on Manus Island, Greens useless [ABC - 5/10/16]:

... PNG Opposition Leader Don Polye told ABC's Pacific Beat program that the Government is not adhering to the court decision.

"A court order is a court order and it must be respected," he said.

"The Foreign Minister, neither the Prime Minster can give excuses in interpreting the court order in a completely different perspective."

Mr Poyle said the PNG Government is distorting the court's decision.

"I think the Government is doing it for reasons, none other than serving business and serving political interests," he said.

He has also called on Australia to recognise the court's decision.

"The Australian Government has the responsibility also to look at the court decision and Australia should maintain its compliance to the order of the court," he said.

Mr Polye said if the PNG Government doesn't recognise the supreme court decision, the opposition will take legal action.

"What I will do, if the Government interprets it wrongly … we will take the matter to the court," he said.

"We will also make sure that those giving a completely different interpretation of the supreme court decision are in contempt of court. They should be charged for contempt of the decision by the supreme court."

Australian Greens Immigration Spokesman Nick McKim said the court ruling can't be ignored.

Senator Nick McKim said it was an extraordinary move that flew in the face of public comments from the PNG Government and Mr Dutton. Media player:

"It wouldn't matter where people are being processed, where on Manus or anywhere else in Papua New Guinea that people are being processed," he said.

"The whole system of indefinite offshore detention is inhumane, is illegal.

"Now they seem to us to be trying to work around a decision made by the Supreme Court of Papua New Guinea, when the solution is actually staring Peter Dutton in the face, and that is to bring the people who are currently detained on Manus Island here to Australia." ...  <--- You can't end a bipartisan policy of torture by attacking one side. Perhaps McKim would rather support the ALP than free the refugees ?

Richard Marles lies about refugee concentration camps stopping death, says PNG should change their law [ABC - 28/4/16]:

... LOUISE YAXLEY: The Immigration Minister, Peter Dutton, says there will be continued discussions with the PNG government to resolve the matters. And the shadow minister, Richard Marles, says it is very important to try to convince PNG to keep the centre open.

RICHARD MARLES: Because it is very clear that offshore processing has been the single most important decision of any Australian government in bringing an end to the loss of life at sea.

LOUISE YAXLEY: Mr O'Neill is definitive that the centre will be closed but he also talks about the harm that that will cause the local economy and the need for Australia to help support businesses that will suffer. Richard Marles says the Government should talk to PNG about potentially changing the law to make the detention legal or offer PNG more money.

RICHARD MARLES: All of those options need to be talked through with the PNG government. ...

New Zealand government rejects refugees, refers them to the UNHCR regional representative in Australia - who ignored them [RNZI - 13/6/15]:

The Government has told 65 asylum seekers wanting to live in New Zealand to contact United Nations officials in Australia.

The people, from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar, say they were heading for New Zealand when they were shipwrecked on an Indonesian reef earlier this month.

In a letter seen by Radio New Zealand, the group made a plea to the Government for asylum, saying it is unsafe for them to return home.

A written reply from the office of the Immigration Minister, Michael Woodhouse, said while New Zealand accepted 750 refugees annually, it could not pick and choose.

It said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Canberra was responsible for inquires dealing with New Zealand and suggested the group approach that office. [The UNHCR Canberra said nothing.]

A UN representative in Indonesia said they met with the group, 52 of whom were registered as refugees. [As far as we know, these refugees are still detained in Kupang.]

Destroying Syria: A joint criminal enterprise [Counterpunch - 4/10/16]:

... The timing of this petition is eloquent.

It comes exactly when the Syrian government is pushing to end the war by reconquering the eastern part of Aleppo.

It is part of the massive current propaganda campaign to reduce public consciousness of the Syrian war to two factors: child victims and humanitarian aid. In this view, the rebels disappear.

So do all their foreign backers, the Saudi money, the Wahhabi fanatics, the ISIS recruits from all over the world, the U.S. arms and French support.

The war is only about the strange whim of a “dictator”, who amuses himself by bombing helpless children and blocking humanitarian aid.

This view reduces the five-year war in Syria to the situation as it was portrayed in Libya, to justify the no-fly zone: nothing but a wicked dictator bombing his own people.

For the public that likes to consume world events in fairy tale form, this all fits together.

Sign a petition on your computer and save the children.

The Avaaz petition does not aim to end the war and restore peace.

It clearly aims to obstruct the Syrian government offensive to retake Aleppo. ...
