Journalists sue Trump over kill list designations [The Hill - 31/3/17]:

Two journalists are suing President Trump and other top U.S. officials, claiming that they are on the government's "kill list" of individuals targeted for drone strikes, Politico reported Thursday.

The journalists, former Al Jazeera Islamabad bureau chief Ahmad Zaidan and freelance journalist Bilal Kareem, say in the lawsuit that they were placed on the "kill list" by the Obama administration, a decision maintained by the Trump White House.

Kareem claims he has nearly died in five separate airstrikes over the year, while Zaidan, who has reported extensively on al Qaeda and interviewed the terrorist group's now-deceased leader, Osama bin Laden, multiple times, says he is on the "kill list" because he was improperly designated as a member of the group, as well as the Muslim Brotherhood. ...

I'm talking to you from Manus Prison.

Australia exiled me by force three years ago.

What is my crime?

I am a refugee who fled injustice, discrimination and persecution. I didn't leave my family by choice.

I would like to raise two questions. Why am I still here in this illegal prison after three years? And why hasn't the Australian government accepted the PNG Supreme Court decision?

The ABC has suspended the Chaser's War on Everything program for two weeks.

The suspension follows widespread criticism of a sketch that satirised the Make a Wish foundation which aired last Wednesday night.

In a statement, the ABC says the suspension will give the program time to complete a review of editorial approval processes.

ABC managing director Mark Scott made the decision following the controversy surrounding The Chaser's sketch, 'Make A Realistic Wish Foundation', that went to air on Wednesday night.

The Chaser later issued a statement on its website, saying the group does not agree with the ban but wanted to apologise for the sketch. ...

... The plight of the 30,000 “legacy” refugees is the direct responsibility of the previous Labor government, which was kept in office by the Greens from 2010 to 2013, as well as of the current Coalition government.

These asylum seekers were the last to land in Australia before the Labor government reopened the refugee prison camps on Nauru and Manus Island, Papua New Guinea in 2012, and declared that all future arrivals would be sent there.

In July 2013, the Labor government then shut the border permanently, saying no refugees who arrived by boat would ever to be permitted to settle in Australia.

The levels of stress on asylum seekers forced to live on bridging visas, constantly watched and hounded by immigration officials, have driven a number to suicide, including a 21-year-old Rohingya man who had fled Burma as an unaccompanied teenager and set himself on fire on the floor of a bank in Melbourne.

The Turnbull Coalition government is now preparing to take that inhumane policy to its ultimate conclusion of removing tens of thousands of refugees from the country.

Like the governments in the US, across Europe and around the world,

Australia is victimising some of the world’s most desperate and vulnerable people often driven to seek asylum as a result of criminal US-led interventions and wars. [WSWS - 31/3/17]
