1,000s flee as Philippines military bomb and conduct "clearing operations" in Lanao province [Reuters - 28/11/16]:

The Philippines military dropped bombs from planes and rained artillery shells on southern rebels on Monday, the third day of a siege of militants sympathetic to Islamic State, during which 35 guerrillas have been killed, the army said.

Several U.S.-made OV-10B planes circled in the air before diving and dropping payloads on fortified positions of the Maute rebel group, which has occupied a town hall in Lanao province, said army spokesman Major Filemon Tan.

"As of noon today, there's heavy engagement in the area as our troops are conducting clearing operations," Tan said, adding 13 soldiers were wounded in the offensive, which began on Saturday.

Thousands of residents have fled as hundreds of troops, backed by heavy artillery and armoured vehicles, moved in to flush out the rebels.

Italian-made trainer planes and OV-10 Bronco aircraft were also called in help retake the old municipal hall. ...

Mushaal Mullick leads protest in Muzafarabbad [Kashmir Today - 27/11/16]:

SRINAGAR: A group of civil society activists staged a rally here on Sunday to register a protest against the recent instances of shelling on a minibus and an ambulance in PaKs Neelum valley,a statement issued to the media said.

Some ambulances were also part of the rally, which began from Azadi Chowk, outside Press Club, and culminated some 500 yards head at the Garhipan Chowk.

The symbolic rally was led by Mushaal Hussein Mullick, wife Yasin Malik.

Participants raised slogans against unceasing oppression and killings in J&K and demanded complete withdrawal of forces at the earliest and holding of a free and fair plebiscite in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Mullick said India was using the most lethal weapons in held Kashmir, such as pellets, PAVA shells and stun grenades, which were causing visual and aural impairments to people.

Apart from unleashing reign of terror in Kashmir, India was also attacking unarmed and innocent civilian populations living along the LoC in PaK, which must not go unnoticed.

Ms Mullick urged the world bodies, particularly the UN Human Rights Council, to send their fact-finding missions to monitor the scale and depth of human rights violations in held Kashmir.

Ms Mullick later visited a camp of Kashmiri refugees near here, where she interacted with the refugees and vowed to play her role in resolution of the problems being faced by them.

She also distributed blankets and clothes amongst the refugees.

For more than 6 weeks the innocent and peaceful-living Rohingyas have been made systematic targets of wholesale destruction, killing, raping and looting and arson attacks.

The Myanmar military and security forces have killed more than 500 people, raped hundreds of women, burned down over 2500 houses, destroyed mosques and religious schools, and perpetrated other inhuman acts.

...

Due to ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity, the Rohingyas are fleeing to Bangladesh for a temporary shelter to save their lives.

They strongly desire to return to their ancestral homeland of Arakan as soon as possible and live a life in peaceful-coexistence with other ethnic groups, as responsible citizens of Myanmar, rather than to live in humiliation as refugees in alien lands.

But it is frustrating that United Nations, powerful countries and Myanmar neighbours, have taken no concrete step to response to the serious humanitarian needs of the helpless Rohingyas and to stop the ongoing genocide against them.  ...

Inquest hears about deadly, medical neglect aspect of Australia's refugee "deterrence" policy [Brisbane Times - 28/11/16]:

There were good indications Iranian asylum seeker Hamid Kehazaei was suffering from sepsis when he was treated on Manus Island, an inquest has been told.

Mr Kehazaei, also known as Khazaei, died in Brisbane's Mater Hospital after his leg became infected at the processing centre.

The 24-year-old was treated at the facility before being taken to a hospital at Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea.

He was then flown to Brisbane after developing severe septicaemia from an infected cut.

An inquest at the Brisbane Coroners Court is investigating the adequacy and appropriateness of the medical treatment Mr Kehazaei received before his death.

He was admitted to the Manus Island clinic with a fever on August 23, 2014, the inquest was told on Monday.

Paramedic Rafael Cruz said that within 36 hours there were "good indications" he had sepsis and needed to be transferred to hospital.

"That needs to be treated quite urgently and in a place of higher care," he told the inquest.

"I think there was a general consensus on day two that he needed to be in a place of higher care.

"We were trying to get him out, get him to the hospital on the mainland. He was not improving. He was actually getting worse."

Mr Cruz and another paramedic found an abscess on Mr Kehazaei's leg on the first night.

"We only found the sore ... because we happened to do a physical exam of him in the night," he said.

"It was noticeable. It was like an abscess."

Mr Cruz said he was concerned because the fever was not responding to antibiotics.

Mr Kehazaei was still talking and walking on his first night in the clinic but was in a wheelchair by the second night, the inquest heard.

"He was very, very sick," he said.

"He was complaining of having a lot of pain from his leg."

Mr Cruz said infections were "abundant" at the centre because of the remote location, high humidity and daily rain.

One of the many alarming facts that came to light with the release of the executive summary of the Senate Torture Report in 2014 was that the Justice Department’s Bureau of Prisons had sent a “delegation of several officers” to Afghanistan to conduct an assessment an infamous CIA detention site and concluded the CIA “did not mistreat the detainees.”

Senate investigators found that the bureau officers visited a detention site code-named Cobalt north of Kabul in November 2002.

That site — also known as the Salt Pit — has become infamous for the brutal torture inflicted on detainees there, including rectal exams conducted with “excessive force.”

... Abu Sayed has fought hard for the revolution in Aleppo, his hometown.

During the holy month of Ramadan in August, he fasted with a bullet hole healing in his thigh. He continued to fight, limping across sniper alleys on the front lines of the city.

Eventually his family’s apartment was overrun by the regime and he began sleeping in a mosque.

Three weeks later during a mortar attack, shrapnel ripped though his neck. When he woke up, he saw his friends above him, saying, “Abu Sayed was a good man.”

When he lost consciousness again, he dreamed his 17-year-old brother, Hamdino — who was shot through the heart during an earlier protest — was holding his hand, guiding him somewhere.

He brother then stopped and told Sayed he had to go back.

As Sayed recounted his near-death experience, he smoked a cigarette and tears welled in his eyes. Patches of gauze were still taped to his neck.

“You know one of the FSA leaders from Maraa?” he asked.

“They go into the free area when there’s fighting in Salahhadin. I see them taking screens, computers, telephones, everything they can lay their hands on.”

He said he's seen civilians executed after rebels recklessly accuse them of being mercenaries for the regime.

“I saw one beaten to death,” he said.

“The FSA didn’t check their facts, and now he’s dead. I know the man. He was 46. He has five children.”

“We have lost the civilians now,” he said, exhaling smoke.
