"Not In Our Name" double page advertisement in The Age [1 March, 2014]:

We, the undersigned, publicly declare:

To the Australian people,

To the Federal Coalition Government,

To the Federal Opposition,

To all refugees currently held in offshore detention centres:

THAT WE BELIEVE THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ARE IMMORAL, INHUMANE AND INCONSISTENT WITH OUR HUMANITARIAN OBLIGATIONS UNDER INTERNATIONAL LAW:

1. The ongoing incarceration of refugees in offshore detention centres, with consequent distress and physical injury, and the recent death of Reza Berati, one of the refugees in our care.

2. The continual demonising of refugees, and the framing of the refugee issue as primarily relating to Australian sovereignty, rather than as worldwide tragedy demanding a compassionate and global response.

We state that these actions should not have taken place in our nation - or indeed any civilized society - and though they have been enacted by a democratically elected government, we reject them, and declare that they were done not in our name.

We call on all thinking an concerned citizens of the nation to raise their voices in protest against the shameful actions of this government and its agencies, and to make peaceful but urgent representation to their local members on this vital issue; the moral integrity of our country is at stake and our role in the concert of civilized nations.

Signed:

William and Margaret Henderson  ...

Protests in Kuala Lumpur, Dhaka, Jakarta and Bangkok against Myanmar military's latest pogrom against Rohingya [Channel News Asia - 25/11/16]:

... Meanwhile, around 300 demonstrators in Jakarta gathered in front of the Myanmar embassy calling for an end to the violence.

The protesters demanded that Myanmar stop the attacks on the Rohingya, and urged the Indonesian government and the United Nations to condemn the acts and take stern action.

Two hours after the protest began, police helped to facilitate a meeting between demonstrators and members of the embassy.

Three people representing the protesters spoke with embassy officials, and urged them to take action.

“We conveyed to them that what is happening to the Rohingya in Myanmar is a serious crime against human rights," said Iskandarsyah Siregar, spokesperson of the Alliance for the Unity of Muslims who was one of the people that met with officials at the embassy.

"It is genocide, and what is clear is that we condemn it. We demanded that the government of Myanmar take clear action towards what their government there (in Myanmar) is doing."

Iskandarsyah said that the group had asked the embassy to provide a response to their assertions by Monday, threatening to protest again if they did not.

“We asked them, their stance towards the Rohingya, is it because they are Muslims? If so, that means that the government of Myanmar is clearly hostile to Muslims. And we in Indonesia, as the biggest Muslim population, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, of course it makes us one of their enemies,” he told Channel NewsAsia. ...

Manus:  What's news Behrouz? via  ‏@KateSusabu [25/11/16]:

Two days ago the Wilson officers beat one of the refugees in VRSA which is a room near medical where they keep people with mental problems.

I heard from a source that probably two of his ribs were broken, but there are not enough medical facilities in Manus and it's hard to know what really happened to him.

The officers put him on the ground and his ribs were injured because of that.

We don't have access to VRSA and don't know exactly what happened between the refugee and Wilson officers.

I know the refugee, he has mental problems and I have already published something about him on this page.

He also has some kind of chronic skin condition and some internal illness.

He is seriously mentally sick and several times has tried to burn or hurt himself.

A day before the incident with Wilson, he made a suicide attempt with a sheet, but when he was trying to hang himself the officers did not allow him.

...

One recent incident highlighted The Syria Campaign’s skillful handling of press relationships from Aleppo to media markets across the West.

It was August 17, and a Syrian or Russian warplane had just hit an apartment building in rebel-held eastern Aleppo.

Sophie McNeill, a Middle East correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, received a photo from the Syrian American Medical Society, which maintains a WhatsApp group networking doctors inside rebel territory with international media.

The photo showed a five-year-old boy, Omran Daqneesh, who had been extracted from the building by members of the White Helmets and hoisted into an ambulance, where he was filmed by members of the Aleppo Media Center.

The chilling image depicts a dazed little boy, seated upright and staring at nothing, his pudgy cheeks caked in ash and blood.

“Video then emerged of Omran as he sat blinking in the back of that ambulance,” McNeill wrote without explaining who provided her with the video.

She immediately posted the footage on Twitter.

“Watch this video from Aleppo tonight. And watch it again. And remind yourself that with #Syria #wecantsaywedidntknow,” McNeill declared.

Her post was retweeted over 17,000 times and the hashtag she originated, which implied international inaction against the Syrian government made such horrors possible, became a viral sensation as well.
