Thousands of asylum applications remain pending even though the influx of undocumented migrants into Greece from neighboring Turkey has plummeted over the past year.

A total of 2,627 migrants landed on the islands of the eastern Aegean from Turkey between January 1 and March 5 this year, according to government data. In the same period last year, that number was 121,426.

However, the reception centers for migrants on those islands remain excessively overcrowded as the majority of the 14,018 people in the facilities have lodged asylum applications. ... [Ekathimerini - 18/3/17]

Migrants demonstrate against EU-Turkey Deal on Lesvos [Greek Reporter - 18/3/17]:

... The rally was in celebration of the international day of action against racism, war, fascism and poverty.

It was also the first anniversary of the EU-Turkey deal, that went into effect on March 20, 2016.

The rally started at Sappho Square in Mytilene, with refugees and migrants of the living in Moria and Kara Tepe migrant camps, and many supporters from solidarity organizations, political groups and students.

The protesters shouted slogans against the agreement and the registration centers that also serve as detention centers.

“Shut down Moria” was one of the slogans in the peaceful demonstration, with protesters demanding open borders, freedom to all and an end to deportations.

Book review of Mya Guarnieri Jaradat's 'The Unchosen: The Lives of Israel’s New Others' [The National - 26/2/17]:

... From early statehood, Israel enacted laws designed to keep foreign non-Jews from becoming citizens, or at least made the process extremely difficult.

This is all the more unique, as Jaradat notes, because Israeli officials helped draft the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention that defined who is a refugee and outlined the responsibilities of nations granting asylum.

...

Israel’s treatment of guest workers is one long thread in Jaradat’s chronicle but it is the country’s position on asylum seekers that is deeply jarring.

Over the last decade, thousands of Eritrean and Sudanese asylum seekers have reached the Israeli border in the Sinai after harrowing overland journeys.

Unable to simply turn them back, Israel has essentially incarcerated asylum seekers in vast desert prisons.

A new and expensive wall along Israel’s southern border with Egypt has succeeded in curtailing large numbers of refugees from reaching Israel, however there are still an estimated 40,000 who remain in the country in a difficult limbo: they cannot work legally, but they also cannot apply for asylum.

There is something deeply uneven about this story.

Israel, a country nominally founded to protect Jewish refugees fleeing the violence of Nazi Europe, now forcefully turns its back on Africans in desperate need of safety. ...

Lawyers for the man accused of orchestrating the USS Cole bombing are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene in the military tribunal here [Guantanamo] accounts of the captive’s CIA torture drawn from declassified documents and an interrogator’s recent memoirs.

The 38-page petition with hundreds of pages of supporting documents describes Abd al Rahim al Nashiri’s being sodomized, kept naked and kenneled like a dog, crammed into a box the size of an office safe and being threatened with a revved power drill while hanging shackled and nude from a cell ceiling.

And that’s from the portion that isn’t blacked out.

In the petition, the Pentagon-paid lawyers ask the justices to let them challenge Nashiri’s U.S. military detention in Federal Court — now, before his Guantánamo death-penalty tribunal — because the CIA subjected him to years of “physical, psychological and sexual torture.”

They also ask the justices to resolve the open legal question of when the “War on Terror” began. ... [Miami Herald - 18/3/17]
