A Turkish prosecutor on Tuesday ordered the detention of 125 police officers in the investigation of a religious movement the government blames for an unsuccessful military coup, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

Carl Gershman, who has headed NED since its founding in 1983, doesn’t cite any evidence that Putin was responsible for the death of Anna Politkovskaya but uses a full column in The Washington Post on Friday to create that impression, calling her death “a window to Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin autocrat whom Americans are looking at for the first time.” ... South Sudan says rebels kill 21 civilians in ambush [Reuters - 10/10/16]:

Rebels attacked trucks carrying civilians in South Sudan, killing 21 people, the government said, as violence between rival forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and his former vice president risks dragging the country back into civil war.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said in a statement on Monday it had received reports of horrific violence being perpetrated against civilians in Central Equatorial State and urged both rebel and government commanders to control their forces.

The government said on Monday 21 civilians were killed, some burned to death, and about 20 wounded when rebel gunmen ambushed their vehicles on a road connecting Yei town, in Central Equatorial State, to the capital Juba on Saturday.

Jacob Lem Chan, a local government official, said four trucks were ambushed and victims were burned and shot at.

On Monday, abducted South Sudanese journalist Malek Bol, who had been missing since Friday, was dumped at a graveyard in Juba, said Mathing Cirilo, editor of the Almugif Arabic newspaper where Bol worked.

Bol said his captors had beaten him.

"He was told by those who abducted him that he has abused the president on his social media," Cirilo said.

"He has a broken arm."

No government official was available for comment.

Bol is the seventh journalist kidnapped, beaten and dumped in South Sudan this year, Cirilo said.

Ten journalists have been killed since the fighting erupted in 2013.

Chapter 3 - Colonial defence:  Australia or empire? - Unnecessary Wars, Henry Reynolds [NewSouth - 2016]:

... The government in Sydney made a sudden decision early in 1885 to send a contingent of 700 troops to assist a British campaign in the Sudan following the death in Khartoum of the charismatic General Charles Gordon.

The troops were sent, without the prior approval of parliament, by the attorney-general and acting premier, W B Dalley.

By the time parliament met, the contingent was halfway to Africa.

A debate that stretched over five nights ended with a strong endorsement of the government's precipitate action while providing a valuable compendium of contemporary parliamentary opinion about war, and peace, the colonies and the empire.

By a two-thirds majority the Legislative Assembly passed the following motion:

We desire to express our hearty approval of the conduct of the ministers in despatching the Australian contingent to aid the imperial forces in Egypt and we regard their action as manifesting the loyalty of the Australian people to the Crown, and as drawing more closely together the various portions of our great empire.

On the passage of the motion members rose and gave three cheers for the Queen.

The most radical challenge to the imperialists came from the member for Mudgee, David Buchanan.

He ridiculed what they proudly called their 'duty' and their 'loyalty'.

The duty of the colonists was to 'stand upon this ground, and never either now or hereafter send a soldier from our shores'; it was to 'defend ourselves agsinst attack by repelling invaders, and we have no duty cast upon us to do anything else'.

And the war in the Sudan was a disreputable one, fought against people who were struggling for their freedom.

The Australians had gone to fight against men who had never done harm to them 'and who have never seen them in the face'. ...

We are sick of hearing from lying politicians, pro-ALP rights advocates, opinionators and compromised academics. Start holding the oppressors to account, and LET THE PEOPLE SPEAK!  --->  These ten demands represent ex-detainee RISE members’ campaign to address urgent issues affecting asylum seekers and refugees seeking protection from persecution.

The demands identify the systemic changes that need to occur, in order to dismantle unjust laws and institutions that engage in and promote the abuse and criminalisation of our members.

WE DEMAND, that our voices and the campaigns and initiatives we create for ourselves are brought to the forefront; that non-detainees desist from managing us and speaking on our behalf when proposing alternative suggestions to detention centres.

Such proposals and recommendations must be made by detainees and ex-detainees only.

WE SAY, the ONLY alternative to detention is NO DETENTION, with FREEDOM, JUSTICE, and proper humanitarian safeguards.

As refugees and asylum seekers we have been exploited and criminalised for having survived persecution, torture and abuse; we refuse to apologise for being survivors of this abuse.  [RISE]

Guardian [1 March, 2014]:

Chilling footage has emerged of “war zone”-like scenes during last week’s unrest at the Manus Island detention centre, showing dozens of asylum seekers – most unconscious or semiconscious and many with serious injuries – receiving treatment from frantic staff tending to them by torchlight.

“It was like a war zone,” a witness to the filmed events told Guardian Australia. “People were covered in blood – so many people came in half an hour.”

The footage was filmed between 12.41am and 1.06am on Tuesday.

Almost immediately afterwards, witnesses say, all staff on the floating accommodation block, Hotel Bibby, were asked to help, whether or not they had medical training.

At this point the number of casualties increased.

“The medics were short of staff. It was chaotic,” a witness said.

The wounded asylum seekers were separated into three areas: an assessment area, a critical area and a non-critical area, according to the witness.

At 12:58am one asylum seeker, a tall, muscular, young man can be seen being brought in for assessment and then moved instantly off for further treatment. His body is limp, hanging off the end of the stretcher.

Guardian Australia has contacted a family member of Reza Barati, who said they could not identify the young man in the image.

“People were moaning, ‘Papu, Papu’ – meaning local people,” said the witness to the filmed events. ...

Rohingya advocacy groups worldwide are voicing concern at what they claim is a violent crackdown on the Muslim minority group following the murder of nine police officers in Myanmar.

The nine died along with eight armed men in three separate attacks on police outposts on the Myanmar-Bangladesh border in western Rakhine State early Sunday.
