Colombia deports over 1,000 US-bound Cuban refugees [Pittsburg Post-Gazette - 10/8/16]
A group of migrants from Venezuela has been detained off the coast of the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao, authorities say.
Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard spokesman Roderick Gouverneur said all 21 migrants remained in custody Monday.
The boat carrying the migrants was detected around midnight Friday about 6 miles (10 kilometers) south of the island in the southern Caribbean Sea, the Coast Guard said in a statement.
Authorities found 20 people from Venezuela and one Colombian on board.
Authorities confiscated contraband that included cigarettes and ammunition and detained all on board on suspicion of attempting to illegally enter Curacao, the statement said.
An increasing number of people have been seeking to leave Venezuela amid the collapse of the oil-based economy in the South American nation 40 miles (65 kilometers) to the north of Curacao.
Venezuelan opposition leaders said months ago they believed people could begin leaving the country for nearby islands. [Daily Mail - 9/8/16]

Anything less than the above demands sustain the status quo.

Responding to The Guardian's "Nauru files" leak today, Amnesty International's Senior Director for Research Anna Neistat said:
"This leak has laid bare a system of 'routine dysfunction and cruelty' that is at once dizzying in its scale and utterly damning for the Australian authorities who tried so hard to maintain a veil of secrecy.
"When Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch went to Nauru against the odds and saw with our own eyes the appalling and systemic abuses taking place, the Australian government tried to roundly deny our findings.
“The exposure of just how appalling the conditions on Nauru are - and the impact of this on refugees - has to end the government of Australia’s denials.
“Australia's offshore processing of refugees must end, and all of the refugees and asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus Island must be resettled immediately and given the medical and psychological support they need. It is clear from these documents, and our own research, that many have been driven to the brink of physical or mental breakdown by their treatment on Nauru.
"The Australian government has engaged in one of the most successful mass cover-ups I've witnessed in my career of documenting human rights violations. They've repeatedly said this kind of abuse has not been going on. They've been lying."
UNHCR Australia lies about conducting regular visits since 2012, calls for "solutions". Would they be "durable solutions"?

The purpose of NO ADVANTAGE and PACIFIC SOLUTION policies for refugees [who are] described as queue jumpers to be punished in underdeveloped countries and be processed as long as it will take for refugees who applied for UNHCR resettlement process from Indonesia that attest take 3 to 4 years to get an answer.
The difference between us and refugees who are in Indonesia is that we have been processed in DETENTION CENTRE under mouldy tents. ...
We can witness a processing case from a refugee that applied UNHCR in July 2013 in Indonesia who has been accepted and will be resettled in Australia next week, but Nauru refugees still located in Nauru and they are just eligible enough to tolerate the discrimination from UNHCR processing system.
This strategy has proved to all Nauru refugee that the time of the torture is over and all refugees deserve to be transferred as soon as possible to the 28 UNHCR countries so they can start their new life if they are still mentally and physically healthy.
In conclusion, we are asking from UNHCR to arrange a resettlement in the 27 UNHCR countries except Australia.
But it is obvious that regarding to UNHCR, absence of visiting Guantanamo, government of Australia have used the opportunity to cover some of the problems and disasters therefore it is fair for us to doubt on your visitation of Nauru after all these years for another political games.

Marles said it was important that “people be gotten off Nauru”.
“There need to be third country options found for those on Nauru and Manus, and in that the government has wholly failed,” he said.
“Of course, as people’s uncertainty continues, as hope is removed, you’re going to see increasing acts of desperation. The government needs to get on its skates and find third country resettlement options for those on Nauru and Manus.” ...

She was originally bought in to conduct refugee-assessment interviews and claims she was told to tell inmates their only option was resettlement in Papua New Guinea.
Ms Thompson said she knew their only option was indefinite detention, and so did they.
"I would not go back because there is no process, nothing for me to do, no process to assist people with - it's fake," she said.
"It's not designed as a processing facility, it's designed as an experiment in the active creation of horror to deter people from trying in the first place."
Ms Thompson told Dateline she was given a script to follow while conducting refugee assessments.
"We were informed that we were not to discuss resettlement, we were not to discuss third country options," she said.
"It was made very clear to us every day, sometimes even twice a day, under the threat of being removed from the island, we were not to talk about a third country, we were not to suggest there were any resettlement options, we were not to suggest they would be able to get off PNG," she said.
“We knew that this was ridiculous, but we were lying to people and we were told to keep that message going to keep it clear."

Refugee Council of Australia perpetuates the obscene "boats have stopped" lie. [Guardian - 10/8/16]:
... “With the success of the Government in stopping the arrival of people seeking asylum by boat, there can be no further excuse not to bring these people to immediate safety.”
Why stopping people from seeking asylum is more than just wrong [Jesuit Refugee Service - 28/7/16]:
... What about the people who would have boarded boats headed for Australia, but have not done so because of its current policy of absolute deterrence?
Has a “stop the boats” policy resolved the global challenge of forced migration?
Evidence has emerged in a recent paper by Caroline Fleay and Lisa Hartley that “Australian policies are having disturbing impacts beyond our borders.”
The authors describe how the Australian government’s direct collaboration with Sri Lankan security agencies has prevented the departure of people who are in fear of persecution and would like to seek asylum elsewhere.
The paper also outlines how the government’s policies restrict the ability of people seeking asylum to move beyond transit countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, and effectively warehouse them in countries that deny them access to health services, education, and the labour market; these people also have little to no prospect of resettlement.
Alarmingly, the paper cites community members in Malaysia who claim that, because the route to Australia has been blocked, “those seeking safety and protection from their home countries are now undertaking longer and more hazardous journeys to Europe.”
This troubling development points to an uncomfortable truth: all because people are not drowning on their way to Australia, this does not mean that they are not dying elsewhere.
The complacency in Australia about the fate of those who can no longer arrive here by boat can be summed up in the old adage: out of sight, out of mind. ...

The great academic Noam Chomsky once wrote: “The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum”.
This quote perfectly encapsulates the current debate around constitutional reform – where there is a bipartisanship backed by reams of PR spin as a “positive”, while in reality it demonstrates one of the most insidious developments in black policy today – a dangerous “Canberra consensus”, as described by Indigenous policy expert Jon Altman.
How can two white leaders agreeing on the best way to shortchange blackfellas, at the expense of Aboriginal opinion, be a good thing?
The debate around ‘Recognise’ is made worse by the fact even the Greens are snuggly in the fold, leaving the opposition to a growing chorus of disenchanted and disenfranchised Aboriginal people, who are vilified for their justifiable and commendable cynicism. ...
